Planetary Healing & Ecological Design

"The Final Lecture: Dr. John H Todd on Planetary Healing & Ecological Design"
With the use of the different types of eco machines, especially in more rural places that do not have access to clean water I think we will see a big difference in not only the community health but also the priorities and focuses of the communities.
In regions and areas where the only water that they have access to is a 4-mile walk away and even then the water is contaminated with all different types of pollutants, the main focus of everyday life is water. When that main issue is taken away it will allow for there to be focus on something else. When these areas have access to technologies and methodologies to clean their water, there will be a decrease in health issues, which will impact the community greatly. Normally when places are having issues like these, community service troops will come into the community to build wells, and fundraisers will come drawing attention to the dire situations of the villages. However, once these places have access to clean water, their exposure and visits from outside communities will go down. I think then that these communities will be able to return and create their own identity as a village rather than that as one that is plagued by water vulnerability.
As much as I want to say yes that I will use integrated ecological design in my future practice, I do not think that that is a point of interest in a lot of larger commercial firms. I think if I had the opportunity to suggest and implement an integrated ecological design I would. I think the more exposure that it gets the more it will catch on.
As discussed in this video, the facilities that are supposed to be providing clean drinking water and supposed to be handling sewage treatment, are in fact producing a lot of CO2. This does provide populations with clean water but at the cost of the environment’s health. With the solutions of the Eco Machines, such as the example provided in East Burlington, communities would be able to treat thousands of gallons of sewage at no risk to the environment, all while harnessing the powers of ecological alternatives. And with applications of such Eco Machines, they would be accessible to places, that maybe do not have the ability to pay for electricity to have sewage treatment facilities in their region. This is by far a lot more ethical solution to a problem that is affecting so many people.
